Savvy wine buy: ‘98 Domaine du Cayron Gigondas

Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001 | 8:46 a.m.

Gigondas is a medium-bodied but intensely concentrated red wine from France's Rhone Valley, a blend of varietals such as Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault. It's a powerfully rich wine that can overpower subtle foods, and many experts claim to taste olives and black fruits when they sip it. The winemaker, Michel Faraud, makes this and nothing else, a skill he learned from his father. The must soaks 15 days on its skins, which gives it a deep color, and the wine is made in giant, ancient oak barrels, rare in France these days.

Available at Lee's Discount Liquors, $16.99.
