Reno cable TV system sold

Charter Communicatons Inc. of St. Louis said it agreed to acquire several cable systems throughout the country from AT&T Corp., including cable systems in Reno, Carson City and the surrounding area.
The transaction will affect 156,000 cable customers in Northern Nevada. Charter spokesman Andy Morgan today said the company has no plans to venture into the Las Vegas cable market, which is dominated by Cox Communications.
Charter is also buying AT&T Broadband systems in Alabama, Illinois and Missouri and swapping some systems in Florida to AT&T.
Besides gaining the Florida systems, AT&T will receive up to $500 million in Charter stock and cash. The total value of the deal to AT&T is $1.79 billion.
