UNR coach accused of shading the truth
Monday, Feb. 26, 2001 | 9:55 a.m.
Nevada-Reno coach Chris Tormey made conflicting statements about his knowledge of a Jan. 26 fight involving two of his players, a police report reveals.
Citing a lack of evidence, prosectors decided last week not to charge the two Wolf Pack players and three other suspects in the beating of a student at an off-campus party.
After speaking with a player and a lawyer, Tormey told a detective twice he didn't have knowledge of the brawl, police said. But in a later letter to police, Tormey said he knew about the fight.
University officials declined to comment on the discrepancy, but said they have asked the attorney general's office to look into whether the police investigation had been hindered.
"We are concerned perhaps not all parties responded the way we have hoped they would," said Jim Kidder, associate vice president for planning, budget and analysis.
Prosecutors also questioned why Tormey consulted with a lawyer after learning about the fight from a player, rather than take the information directly to police.
