UNLV notebook: Rebel golfers third in Hawaii tournament
Friday, Feb. 23, 2001 | 11:48 a.m.
James Oh followed his first-round 68 with a 5-under par 67 and two other Rebels jumped into the top 10 as the UNLV golf team climbed to third place after the second round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate tournament in Honolulu.
Oh (68-67--135) is tied for second on the leaderboard, five shots behind New Mexico's Michael Letzig (66-64--130), who is on pace to break the 54-hole tournament record of 198 set by UNLV's Jeremy Anderson last year.
Although Oh's improved play lifted him from fifth place to second, it was the play of senior Scott Lander and freshman Travis Whisman that sparked the team's jump from sixth place to third. Lander (71-68--139) and Whisman (72-67--139) both broke par and sit in an eight-way tie for eighth place at five-under par, while the Rebels (285-275--560) carded a 13-under 275 for the day and are tied with Stanford (275-285--560) for third at 16-under for the tourney.
The Rebels held a two-run lead in the ninth, but watched it melt away behind a six- run final inning by the Tigers.
UNLV's Giovanni Pupo pitched eight innings, giving up six runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.
C.J. Martin (1-1) gave up three runs on two hits in the ninth and was tagged with the loss.
UNLV hosts Clemson today at 3:05 p.m.
Although BYU's Maret Komarova won the pentathlon with 3,892 points, Utah jumped to the top of the team standings with three scorers in the event.
The MWC championships resumed today with both prelims and finals. Finals will also be held on Saturday in all events not completed today.
A senior from Belgrade, Serbia, Zivkovic went a combined 5-0 last week in singles and doubles to lead UNLV to the championship of its own spring invitational.
Zivkovic, ranked 85th in singles and 36th in doubles, won the deciding match in Sunday's final vs. Colorado. Down one set, Zivkovic rallied for a 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 win at the top singles spot to give the Rebels a 4-3 team victory.
