NLV fee for extra cars repealed

Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001 | 11:37 a.m.

North Las Vegas residents will no longer have to pay $20 per year to have more than two vehicles parked near their homes in residential neighborhoods after the City Council unanimously approved a change in the ordinance that required the fee.

In addition to repealing the fee, the change deleted a vehicle storage permit requirement.

"This has been long overdue," Councilwoman Stephanie Smith said before the vote.

In maturing areas of town, where many homes don't have garages or enough space between houses for homeowners to drive a car into the back yards, the change was particularly important, she said.

Now that that part of changing the ordinance has been approved, Smith said, the council plans to work on changing the language of the rest of the ordinance, which she described as complicated.

"At least we got rid of the fee," Smith said. She thought it was ridiculous to allow people to park their cars on or near their property and then charge them for it.

It took more than a month of work by the council and city staff to repeal that part of the ordinance.

The council postponed a handful of related zoning items until April 4 at the request of an applicant, after which more than a dozen people filed out of the chambers.
