Local call center closing, Vegas losing 180 jobs

Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001 | 11:13 a.m.

Phone and communications provider Verizon Wireless said Wednesday it will close its Las Vegas call center and offer to relocate 180 of its 400 Las Vegas employees to other regional call centers.

As part of its $100 million restructuring plan, that will take effect over three years, the Bedminster, N.J., company said it will close five of its 33 call centers that aren't meeting its expansion needs, open four new call centers and expand eight other facilities.

"The Las Vegas center is being closed because it can't meet with growth needs in the customer service area. That call center will be consolidated into an existing regional center in Tempe, Ariz., because it's closer to our regional headquarters in Phoenix," said Jenny Weaver, a Verizon spokeswoman.

"We hope the 180 affected workers will join us either in the Tempe call center or in another expanding facility in Rancho Cordova, Calif.," she said.

She said eight Verizon retail stores and 10 kiosks in Las Vegas will remain open.
