Project proposed in eastern LV
The Las Vegas City Council has designated property at the corner of Stewart Avenue and Mojave Road as the future site of the East Las Vegas Business and Incubator Center.
Residents of eastern Las Vegas in community meetings have voiced a need for programs that will create and retain jobs in their area.
The designation of the city-owned property in City Councilman Gary Reese's ward is seen as the first step in creating a program aimed at helping fledging companies grow to encourage job creation.
Low income families to benefit
Las Vegas will help fund a project that will result in five new homes being constructed downtown.
The Downtown Redevelopment Group, LLC is building five units in an area bound by Las Vegas Boulevard, Carson Avenue, 10th Street, and Hoover Avenue.
The project will provide five homes for residents whose income is below the area median level. Construction will begin by Sept. 31.
The city, through the Redevelopment Set Aside Program, will provide up to $44,000 in redevelopment funds to help with mortgages on the single family homes.
Hispanic group seeks lease deal
The city has entered into negotiations with the Hispanic Association for Bilingual Literacy and Education for a lease agreement to build a family resource center.
The organization is asking the city for a lease to build a $5 million center that will provide community services to include a day-care center, a computer training academy, a research library and a youth educational center. The building will also house several training rooms.
The group will construct the building with various grants. The group recently received $150,000 from Clark County for design of the building.
Architects hired to design project
Lucchesi Galati Architects will begin designing a new park in City Councilman Larry Brown's ward.
The council approved the contract for $181,250 to design a park at the corner of Gilmore Avenue and Campbell Road in the northwest.
The city wants to construct a 10-acre neighborhood park across from Garehime Elementary School with jogging paths, a skate park, tennis courts and basketball courts.
Alliance made with fed agency
The Las Vegas Office of Business Development has entered into an agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce for the Las Vegas Export Assistance Center.
Such centers, part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, provide services to small- and medium-sized U.S companies that export goods and services oversees.
The city has offered offices for the center at the Fifth Street School. The city's would pay $112,600 and the center $112,350 for salaries, travel and printing.
