NLV residents reject bid to acquire property

Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001 | 11:09 a.m.

Four North Las Vegas property owners may be forced by the City Council to give up portions of their lots for the sake of expanding Craig Road near Decatur Boulevard.

The city's property manager, Randy Cagle, made offers to the owners after each portion of a 20-foot strip the south side of Craig Road was appraised at the market value for ranch estate property.

Cagle said that the city was able to obtain property that was needed for the first phase, which will widen Craig Road from Decatur to Commerce Street. A few owners did not, however, accept the city's offers. He will ask the council to approve condemning the pieces of each lot that will be needed for widening.

Each owner was offered about $12,000 for the part of the property the city would need to widen the road. Cagle thinks the residents who have not accepted the offers are holding out because they disagree with the appraisal process.

"The properties are in a ranch estate area and were appraised as ranch estate and the owners feel the property should have been appraised commercial," Cagle said. A commercial appraisal would have meant a higher value for the property.

The properties are about four miles from the site of a proposed hotel near Craig Road and Commerce Street. The proposed hotel was approved by the City Council on Feb. 7.

Attempts to contact owners of the properties were unsuccessful.

The City Council also will vote on an ordinance that will amend a city code that has required residents to obtain vehicle storage permits and pay a $10 semiannual fee for storage and repair of vehicles in North Las Vegas neighborhoods. The ordinance would delete those requirements.
