Letter: GOP continues Clinton pursuit
Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001 | 9:54 a.m.
What is it about the Republican pursuit of Bill Clinton? From the moment Clinton took office there was only one Republican agenda: to harpoon "Slick Willie."
Certainly Clinton has proved to be something less than a far-left liberal, but the Republicans seem to see some basic evil that lies just below the surface.
For nearly a decade conservatives have investigated and impeached in a monomania, only to find themselves swamped in Whitewater and Monica.
The Republicans have lost a House speaker and congressional seats to the fray. Yet even as Clinton leaves office, these self-destructive forces hound him.
"How much money does he make for a speech?" "Did he steal White House furniture?" And, "What about the Marc Rich pardon?"
"Stop," says President Bush. "Don't go there. Turn about!"
The new White House occupant is an expert on winning, and digging into presidential pardons could lead to rough seas.
Bush must be frustrated to have an opportunity to press his agenda only to have it threatened by his own crew as it continues the pursuit of Moby Bill.
