Teens arrested in Phoenix for commissioner’s carjacking

Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001 | 9:43 a.m.

The teens, a boy and a girl, were arrested about 6:30 p.m. Thursday by Phoenix police, who found them with a stolen 1999 Mercedes, a BB gun, a realistic-looking toy pistol and the keys to county Commissioner Bruce Woodbury's 1992 Lexus sedan, Las Vegas police Sgt. Alfredo Cervantes said.

Investigators believe the BB gun and the toy gun were used to simulate weapons in four forced car thefts this week in Las Vegas.

The names of the teens were not released.

Cervantes said they were being held in a Maricopa County juvenile detention facility pending extradition next week to Las Vegas.

He said the two are suspects in four Las Vegas carjackings - a Monday case outside the Harbor Island Apartments, separate Tuesday night carjackings at the Riviera hotel-casino and the Holiday Boardwalk Casino in Las Vegas, and the Wednesday carjacking of Woodbury's Lexus in a Palace Station parking lot.

The Mercedes was taken outside the Holiday Boardwalk, Cervantes said.

No one was hurt in the carjackings.

Woodbury's car was found Thursday in the parking lot of an eastside Las Vegas apartment.
