Class can help in dealing with debt
"Making Ends Meet and Dreams Come True" is the class being offered 6-7 p.m Wednesday at the Consumer Credit Counseling Service, 3650 S. Decatur Blvd., Suite 32.
Participants can learn methods to organize spending, reduce debt and build a brighter future. For more information or to register for this free class, call 364-0344.
High school mock trials to begin
The third annual Nevada High School Mock Trial Competition will be 8 a.m-5 p.m. Saturday in the Family Court courtrooms, 601 N. Pecos Road.
The competition is aimed at teaching the youth in the community how the law works. High school teams, of six to eight students each, are given a case to try in court as if they were attorneys.
This year 26 high schools throughout Nevada are expected to participate, with 16 Clark County high schools competing in the Southern Nevada District Competitions Saturday. For more information, call Richard Vaughan at 451-9929 or 799-3500.
Learn how to adopt a child
or become a foster parent to a child in need. Orientation for both programs will be held 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Sawyer State Office Building, 555 E. Washington Ave., and is open to the public. Call (888) 423-2659.
The National Association of Women Business Owners
will present the "Women of Distinction Awards 2001" beginning 6:30 p.m. March 3 with cocktails and a silent auction at the Rio. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Shade Tree shelter for women and children. RSVP by Wednesday.
The League of Women Voters
will meet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Main Street Social Club. Jackie Crawford, director of Nevada Department of Prisons, will be the guest speaker. She will speak on "Programs For Youthful Offenders."
A book signing by Lana Holstein, M.D.,
will be noon-2 p.m. Thursday at Canyon Ranch Living Essentials Boutique located in the Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian. Holstein wrote the book, "How Magnificent Sex: The 7 Dimensions of a Vital Sexual Connection."
The Asian Chamber of Commerce
will celebrate the Chinese New Year "Year of the Snake 2001" beginning 6 p.m. Friday with a silent auction at the Rio hotel-casino. Cost is $75. 00 per person. Black tie optional.
NAH offering extended hours
The Nevada Association for the Handicapped will extend the hours of its day-care center on Friday to provide evening respite care for families with a member who has a disability.
"Parents' Night Out" makes it possible for the parents and other caregivers of children and adults with disabilities to get a needed break from the daily responsibilities of caring for that family member.
The NAH center, 6200 W. Oakey Blvd., will be open 6:30-10:30 p.m. on Friday.
NAH consumer status is not required. For more information, call 260-6705.
UMC has some tips to stay healthy
The National Institutes of Health says 55 percent of Americans are overweight, and 28 percent are considered obese.
As part of University Medical Center's 70th anniversary of taking care of Clark County, the hospital is offering a series of lectures helping people find the perfect weight and change lifestyles to stay healthy.
The lectures will be 5:30 p.m. Monday at UMC's Peccole Primary Care, 9320 W. Sahara Ave. The lectures are free and open to the public. For more information, call 383-2090.
Car show, poker run are scheduled
ABATE of Nevada will host two special events to benefit the Zelzah Shriners' transportation fund and Candlelighters Children's Cancer Fund.
A Bike and Car Show will be 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at the Harley-Davidson dealership, 2605 S. Eastern Ave. There is a $20 entry fee per vehicle.
A Poker Run will be 8:30-10:30 a.m. Sunday at the Yankee Motorcycle Trader, 4003 W. Spring Mountain Road. Call Dwayne or Penny at 610-8880 or 547-1124.
