Canada-Mexico corridor architects seek comments

Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001 | 10:56 a.m.

Architects of a broad plan to build a route linking commercial highway traffic from Mexico, through the United States and on to Canada will appear in Las Vegas tonight for a public information meeting.

The Nevada Department of Transportation will hold the meeting to discuss the Canamex corridor. The plan is a collaborative effort among the state transportation departments from Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Idaho and Montana to design a north-south transportation corridor for commercial traffic.

The corridor would go through Las Vegas on U.S. 93 and Interstate 15.

The plan addresses opportunities for economic development and transportation efficiency for the next three decades. Robert Mckenzie, NDOT public information officer, said corridor planners will attend the meeting and answer questions from the public.

Gov. Kenny Guinn joined governors from other affected states in December 1999 in a memorandum of understanding to promote the trade corridor and fund road improvements along the route. Also included in the effort to draw up a draft plan are representatives from Canada and Mexico.

The meeting will be from 4 to 7 p.m. at the NDOT district office training room, 123 E. Washington Ave. in Las Vegas. People can view the draft Canamex corridor plan, discuss the project with staff members and submit written comments on the plan.
