Second man arrested in killing
Metro Police homicide detectives arrested a second man in a fatal shooting inside a southeastern Las Vegas mobile home park Friday evening.
Stephen Douglas Gill, 24, of Las Vegas, was arrested Tuesday afternoon in a motel room near Rancho Drive and Lake Mead Boulevard on a charge of murder with a weapon.
Gill was wanted in connection with a shooting that police believe happened after an attempted robbery at the mobile home park in the 3500 block of Estes Park Drive, near East Desert Inn Road and Nellis Boulevard.
Police found 26-year-old Riley Bates shot to death at the scene, and also found 25-year-old Scott Dinwiddie, who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to University Medical Center and is still listed in critical condition.
Police had arrested Christopher Thomas, 23, at the Royal Links Golf Course, 5995 Vegas Valley Drive, on a charge of murder after a search in the area of the mobile home park Friday night.
Buckley to talk about health issues
Assembly Majority Leader Barbara Buckley, D-Las Vegas, will testify Thursday before a congressional committee in Washington, D.C., on how Nevada's prescription drug program for senior citizens is working.
Buckley will appear before a health subcommittee of the Energy and Commerce Committee, which is examining Medicare reform.
She said she favors federal legislation to include prescription drug coverage as part of Medicare. Buckley, in the past, has been critical of Gov. Kenny Guinn's drug program for the elderly, saying it was too slow in starting and doesn't provide adequate coverage for those over 62 with less than $21,000 a year income.
Porter supports alternate study
Sen. Jon Porter, R-Boulder City, said today he supports a resolution passed by the Boulder City Council to explore alternative routes to the proposed Hoover Dam bypass.
He said he backs a study of a route through Laughlin. and Bullhead City, Ariz.
"I believe the Highway 95, Laughlin, Bullhead City -- would be superior to the current plan in place based on the current opposition of the CANAMEX corridor construction by Boulder City residents."
Sex with student is charged
A 27-year-old high school teacher was arrested last week and accused of having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old female student.
Jeremy Green, 27, was booked into the Clark County jail Feb. 6 on eight counts of statutory sexual seduction. Green was a special education teacher and assistant soccer coach at Mojave High School. The girl was not a special education student, said Lt. Tom Monahan of Metro Police's sexual assault unit.
Green is accused of having sexual contact with the girl several times on school grounds and in his car during an alleged relationship that lasted several months, Monahan said.
School officials contacted police after getting some information about the relationship after several rumors were going around campus.
Police started investigating the claim and Green turned himself in at the jail.
Man arrested in apartment fire
A 39-year-old man was arrested Monday and accused of starting a fire in his East Charleston Boulevard apartment, Las Vegas Fire Department officials said.
Lawyer Thomas Pyles was booked into the Clark County jail on one count of first-degree arson Monday night. Firefighters were called to the Charleston Wood Apartments about 9:30 a.m.
No one was at home at the time of the fire. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire and keep damage to a minimum. Damage was estimated at $1,500, fire officials said.
After the fire was put out, firefighters discovered an incendiary device which activated in the apartment and started the fire.
Pyles is accused of leaving the apartment about 10 minutes before the fire. None of the other apartments in the building were damaged.
