Better reporting of cancer urged

Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001 | 11:09 a.m.

CARSON CITY -- The head of an Assembly panel studying a strange outbreak of childhood leukemia in Fallon called Monday for ways to speed up reporting of such cases.

Marcia de Braga, chairwoman of the Natural Resources, Agriculture and Mining Committee, urged the state Health Division to make recommendations how to improve reports of various cancers.

De Braga commented after Dr. Randall Todd, the state epidemiologist, said Nevada's cancer registry is running about two years behind.

Todd, state Health Officer Mary Guinan and other speakers also told the lawmakers that extensive studies are in the works to determine the source of 11 cases of acute lymphocytic leukemia, or ALL, involving children from the Fallon area.
