Sex-slave killer seeks new hearing

Friday, Feb. 9, 2001 | 11:10 a.m.

CARSON CITY -- Gerald Gallego, sentenced to death for the sex-slave murder of two teenage girls, wants a new penalty hearing because he was not allowed to represent himself.

James Logan, chief appellate deputy for the state public defender's office, told the Nevada Supreme Court Thursday that Gallego "wanted to represent himself and he was denied that right for no good reason."

But Brent Kolvet, special prosecutor for Pershing County, urged the court to deny the request.

Gallego, now 54, was sentenced to die for the hammer killings of Karen Twiggs and Stacey Redican, both 17, who were kidnapped from a Sacramento shopping center in April 1980. He drove them to an isolated area near Lovelock in a van.

His former wife, Charlene, testified Gallego was looking for the perfect sex slave.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ordered another penalty hearing after the death sentence was imposed.
