Letter: XFL low on virtue
Friday, Feb. 9, 2001 | 10:16 a.m.
Dean Juipe and Ron Kantowski have written excellent columns about the XFL hype, etc. I went to the first game Saturday and while I'm no prude, it's not something that I can say I honestly enjoyed (we left at the start of the fourth quarter). While I was amazed at the crowd count, the overall feeling that was conveyed through the crowd reminded me of a mud bog, complete with the excess of alcohol and a total disregard for people. I saw more fights in the time I was there than I've seen in years.
Whether it's the language used by the players and the announcers or the blatant exploitation of women, it's a really sad thing.
However, while I'm sure there are many who agree that both of your columns were well done, the sad fact of the matter is that there are also an awful lot of people who feel that this sort of display is acceptable. The XFL will probably prosper and those of us with any values will look at it and just shake our heads.
