Letter: Guinn must act on power now
Friday, Feb. 9, 2001 | 9:51 a.m.
Our governor has only one way out on Nevada's energy problem. He has to cause the power companies to build power plants fast.
California built low-efficiency and high-cost renewable power starting in the 1970s (wind, solar) and its ratepayers overpaid by $25 billion.
Guinn has to clear the deck to build Nevada fossil plants (gas, coal) to produce the power he needs. If the power guys start now, these may be on stream in two to five years if they are lucky.
The longer he waits, the worse it will get, and no rate lids or electrical transfusions will come from California or the surrounding states. He must bite the bullet now.
