Three federal agencies have awarded a total of $7 million to upgrade the University of Nevada, Reno's earthquake simulation laboratory.
The money will be used to upgrade two 14-foot square, 50-ton shake tables, and buy a third table of the same dimensions.
The laboratory won a $4.4 million grant from the National Science Foundation, $1 million from the Department of Energy and $1.6 million from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The laboratory is set up to speed the design of structures to minimize earthquake damage and loss of life.
