Woman jailed with her kids files lawsuit against NLV

Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001 | 11:15 a.m.

A local woman who spent several hours locked up in a holding cell with her three children has filed a $12 million lawsuit against the city of North Las Vegas.

According to the lawsuit, which was filed Monday in U.S. District Court, Lakeisha Nicole Miller was arrested when she went to the North Las Vegas Municipal Court Dec. 21 to clear up some traffic violations during an amnesty program.

Miller said she was informed that she had outstanding warrants in North Las Vegas, Clark County and Las Vegas. She and her children were placed in a locked holding cell and she was handcuffed to the wall.

The lawsuit alleges the children were traumatized by the event. Moreover, one of Miller's children was suffering from bronchitis at the time and was supposed to be placed on an asthma breathing machine every hour, the lawsuit states.

"No reasonable officer would have believed at the time the officers engaged in the aforementioned conduct that Miller posed a danger or threat to herself or anyone else or was a flight risk," the lawsuit states.

Miller is alleging civil rights violations, false imprisonment, negligence in training and supervising, assault and battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

She is represented by attorney E. Brent Bryson.

Calls to the city attorney's office were not returned this morning.
