Letter: Taxpayer dollars not for religion
Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001 | 9:12 a.m.
Mike Smith's Jan. 31 cartoon is right on the mark. No matter how much President Bush's advisers may spin it, the Founding Fathers would not countenance religious organizations serving as government contractors.
As a conservative and a Christian, whose belief in charity can be proven by his canceled checks, I don't want my taxpayer dollars subsidizing the agenda of the religious left and the religious right.
Even at today's level of contracts with state and local government, our two largest faith-based charities receive more from government contracting than they do from actual charitable donations. And they have not been without mismanagement scandals of their own.
