Letter: Concerns include use of revenue, energy crisis
Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001 | 9:11 a.m.
I am really worried about so many things going on all at the same time -- serious things -- and so quickly after the election.
Federal monies going into church organizations for our social problems and child care sounds good on the surface, but stop and think. They are not policed on matters of safety, building codes, cleanliness in the handling of foods, the qualifications of their teaching staff, etc. This money can be used at their own discretion, plus it is the taxpayers' money that would be handed over without any consideration of how they want their money disbursed for the care of their children.
Why can't we put the same money into the early-morning and after-school programs that are already in place? These are at least in safe facilities and under the care of qualified people.
One more concern is our energy crisis, instigated by a sudden shortage of fuel and natural gas and power and water, all happening so suddenly. I would like to know why the oil industry has been selling our crude oil from Alaska to foreign countries at a price less than they would be selling it to the good old U.S.A.
They wouldn't be, couldn't be, deliberately manipulating us -- sort of holding us hostage -- could they? Nooooooo!
