"Her known diplomacy, intellect and humanitarian attributes make her distinctly qualified to serve as a dignified and capable diplomat at the United Nations," Gibbons said Friday in a letter to Bush.
Gibbons supported Mrs. Dole as a presidential candidate early in the 2000 campaign. She served as secretary of transportation and secretary of labor and was president of the American Red Cross from 1991-99.
"President Bush has made outstanding choices to fill his administration and I am confident that Mrs. Dole would be a tremendous asset to this team," he said.
