Assemblyman proposes hi-tech learning center for college

Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001 | 10:10 a.m.

Assemblyman John Marvel, R-Battle Mountain, said the center would help train students for employment in the rapidly expanding hi-tech industry.

"Nevada has a large untrained labor force," Marvel told The Humboldt Sun. He said the proposed center would include about 28,000 square feet of classroom, computer center and lab facilities.

Local leaders are rallying around the project.

"It is an effort to keep our students in town," Winnemucca Mayor Paul Vesco said.

City Council member Patty Herzog said it would help bridge the technology gap between rural and urban areas.

"It is an extension that will bring some higher level programs that we would not be able to offer without the building or equipment," said Lisa Costa-Campbell, director of the college.
