Top receiver to join Rebels

UNLV landed a verbal commitment from one of the top wide receiver prospects on the West Coast Thursday night when Earvin Johnson (6-3 1/2, 195 pounds) of Cathedral High School in Los Angeles committed to head coach John Robinson during a home visit.
Johnson, who was timed at 4.5 in the 40 during a summer scouting combine at USC, picked the Rebels over USC, Colorado, Washington State, Texas A&M, Oregon and Cal.
Johnson originally committed to Georgia Tech last summer but changed his mind following a changeover in the coaching staff. He made his announcement on a Rivals.com recruiting site.
"Coach Robinson really made the difference for me," Johnson told Greg Biggins of PacWest Football. "He's a very impressive person. I felt like I could trust him right away."
Johnson, who visited UNLV Jan. 27-28, is expected to compete for playing time as a freshman. A longtime fan of Keyshawn Johnson, he reportedly has asked to wear No. 19 for the Rebels.
Johnson garnered four votes in the Long Beach Press-Telegram's prestigious Best in the West poll of college coaches.
