March 28: Mount St. Helens Blows Its Top
Story: The picturesque Mount St. Helens volcano, dormant for more than a century, erupted Thursday with a thunderous boom, puffing steam and spewing ash 35 miles away. Evacuation from the mountain and surrounding lowlands was ordered.
July 16: U.S. Flag Will Rise in Moscow
Story: Soviet organizers of the Moscow Olympics plan to unfurl the Stars and Stripes and play "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the Games' closing ceremonies despite U.S. protests, Soviet and Olympic officials said Tuesday.
Nov. 5: Reagan Wins By Landslide
Story: Ronald Wilson Reagan, riding a tide of economic discontent against Jimmy Carter and promising "an era of national renewal," won the presidency Tuesday by sweeping to victories in the South and the crucial battlegrounds of the Middle West.
Nov. 22: 82 Perish in MGM Strip Hotel Fire
Story: A roaring fire swept through the MGM Grand Hotel Friday morning, killing at least 82 persons and leaving more than 500 injured.
At one time, hundreds of guests were trapped on the roof of the massive hotel. Helicopters lifted many to safety from the roof and from the rooms in which they were trapped by smoke and flames.
Dec. 9: John Lennon Shot to Death
Story: Former Beatle John Lennon was shot to death in the vestibule of his luxury Manhattan apartment building Monday night by a man who police said was deranged.
