Letter: Politicians offer hope in trying times
Monday, Dec. 31, 2001 | 8:19 a.m.
Just a note to say thanks and to wish happy holidays to our wonderful representatives, Sens. Harry Reid, Tom Daschle and Rep. Dick Gephardt for looking after the interest of middle class/working people, as well as the retired and those less fortunate.
Nevada's own, the incredible Reid, as usual hit the nail on the head in describing as "laughable" the Republican so-called "stimulus" bill benefiting only the wealthy, and Daschle is also stopping the Republicans in their tracks in trying to eliminate the Democratic efforts to provide medical care and benefits to the unemployed.
The Republican protests and whining, because they can't always have their own way, is in sharp contrast to their trashing everything President Clinton tried to do to help the needy for eight long years.
And kudos, too, to Sen. Jim Jeffords for his courageous decision to become an Independent, giving Democrats the majority voice in Washington, D.C. A kind and generous man, he could no longer tolerate the "compassionate conservative" heartless agenda.
With great men such as these and Sen. Hillary Clinton (our next president in 2004) keeping their eyes wide open, even in these increasingly trying times, it becomes easier to cope.
