Savvy wine buys: Yalumba Oxford Landing Shiraz ‘99
Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001 | 8:46 a.m.
Shiraz is what Australians call Syrah, a Rhone varietal that is grown all over the wine world. This limited-release wine was sourced from old vines planted nearly 50 years ago, a medium-purple nectar that is full of red berries and smoky oak. It's what the wine writers call "jammy" -- in other words, overly concentrated and monstrously big in the glass, but it is still rather young in terms of its potential. That means it is tannic and a bit rough on the palate. But it is an unpolished gem, and at this price, you can grab it, and perhaps drink it in a few years.
Available at Lee's Discount Liquors, $9.99.
