John R. Bailey, a Las Vegas attorney, has been named to the five-member Nevada State Athletic Commission, one of the most sought-after appointments in state government.
Bailey, whose law practice specializes in corporate litigation, gaming and health care, succeeds Glenn Carano of Reno on Dec. 31. Gov. Kenny Guinn announced his selection Friday.
The change means four of the five members will be from Las Vegas, where most of the major boxing matches are held.
A graduate of Western High School, Bailey received a bachelor of arts degree in economics from Colorado College and gained his law degree from McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento, Calif.
Bailey was mentioned previously as a possible appointment to the state Gaming Commission, but that job went to Las Vegas lawyer Peter Bernhard.
He has served as a member of the moral character and fitness committee of the Nevada State Bar and is a former general counsel for the Nevada Republican Party. He was formerly with the law firm of Lionel Sawyer & Collins.
