Stratosphere gets another chance

The Stratosphere has received an invitation from the city of Las Vegas to reconsider pulling its support for a downtown monorail, but it is unclear whether hotel representatives will change their minds.
Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman on Thursday called Richard Brown, chief operating officer at the Stratosphere. Goodman urged Brown to reconsider this week's decision to end the hotel's support for the monorail by pulling back money targeted for the project.
The Regional Transportation Commission last week redesigned the downtown monorail with a stop near the Stratosphere, but not at its front door, as was originally proposed.
The council on Wednesday approved the Stratosphere's request to remove the casino from a $250,000 agreement to fund preliminary studies of the monorail. Brown told Goodman he would speak with Stratosphere owner Carl Icahn to learn whether he wanted to reconsider.
