Columnist Kate Maddox: Touring takes a toll on Newton

Before taking off on another U.S.O. tour to parts unknown, Wayne Newton made sure to get a lot of rest. Last month the singer reportedly fell ill due to exhaustion and dehydration following a whirlwind U.S.O.-concert marathon. Newton told friends that he was so wiped out by the seven-day, 14-show tour, he needed to be treated intravenously for weakness and fatigue. Insiders say Newton recuperated at his Hawaiian retreat and has been monitored closely by doctors since his return to Vegas.

Not that any of this prevented Mr. Las Vegas from saying yes to doing it all over again. Undaunted by the hectic schedule and grueling travel, Newton left Wednesday from Andrews Air Force Base near Washington for the U.S.O. holiday tour.

In Las Vegas, actress Chloe Sevigny traipses the red carpet at an opening and it's, "What movie was she in again? What's she doing here?" In New York, where Chloe goes, who Chloe sees and what Chloe wears means everything to a particularly large cross section of style watchers.

So for those who care, part of the reason the "Boys Don't Cry" star came to Vegas this week was to check out the only shop in town that carries Imitation of Christ -- the haute label for which Sevigny is creative director. The bleary-eyed actress spent quality time trying on outfits at Talulah G, the new boutique at Las Vegas Boulevard and Oakey, opened by Manhattan transfer Meital Bronstein. Sevigny and her pal, fashion designer Jess Holzworth, followed their spree by slumming at Dino's, the seriously unstylish drinkery adjacent to the shop. Dinner at Piero's followed, and on Tuesday it was off to red-carpet obscurity at the Green Valley Ranch Station Casino opening.

Also glimpsed at the GVRSC opening festivities:

Vivica A. Fox, with hubby Christopher Harvest (aka rapper Six-Nine), in town to celebrate their third wedding anniversary. Fox, her diamonds and Harvest hung in the VIP area of Whiskey Sky.

Beleaguered Councilman Michael Mack was not intimidated by the Whiskey Sky bar scene. Mack apparently left his significant troubles at home that night and was happy to simply ogle the action with some buddies.

Siegfried & Roy and protege Darren Romeo also made the rounds at bar owner Rande Gerber's new space. Single guy Roy had just returned from a whirlwind trip to South Africa and Germany to check on his beloved White Tigers.

John Corbett, aka "Aidan" from "Sex and the City," donned duds from the HBO hit for GVRSC's opening. "I borrowed my outfit from the costume people," Corbett admitted to a fellow partygoer. Well, if you believe the rumors about his impending departure during the upcoming season of "Sex and the City," which begins airing in January, Corbett was smart to take what he could, when he could.

And it wouldn't be fair not to at least mention the spectacular fireworks display at the casino bash. Sure, my champagne glass was soot-filled and blackened by the time the show ended, but the lengthy and fabulous production was worth the bubbly.

Light gets turned on Wednesday for VIPs. The Bellagio nightlclub will host an "intimate celebration" for a handful of high-rollers, hotel somebodies and bold-facers from both coasts. Co-owner and club guru Andrew Sasson raided his Rolodex for this one and, trust me, there won't be anything "intimate" about Light's debut.
