Sun Athletes of the Week: Keith Richardson and Carrie Ostler
Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001 | 9:32 a.m.
Male Athlete of the Week: KEITH RICHARDSON
School: Cheyenne
Class: Senior
Sport: Basketball
Last week: Richardson, a 6-0 guard, averaged 15.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, four assists and 4.7 steals in three Desert Shields victories over Green Valley, Snow Canyon (Utah) and Durango. In a 62-42 win over the then-No. 1 Gators Monday, Richardson led the attack with 15 points, 12 rebounds, five steals and three assists. He sprained his ankle later in the week, but is expected back soon. "He does it all for us and he comes to play every night," Cheyenne coach Larry Johnson said. "He's very physical for his size, and he starts our offense by getting his hands on a lot of stuff on the defensive end."
Female Athlete of the Week: CARRIE OSTLER
School: Eldorado
Class: Junior
Sport: Soccer
Last week: Ostler, a starting midfielder, scored game-winning goals in back-to-back games, leading the Sundevils to their first varsity victories over Green Valley and Silverado. Her shot from 10 yards out broke a 1-1 tie against the Gators with six minutes left in Tuesday's 2-1 win, and her 20-yard blast with 10 minutes remaining gave Eldorado a 1-0 win at Silverado on Thursday. "Both teams man-marked our top scorer (Eryn Pictum) and took her out of the mix, so someone else had to start taking the shots and picking up the scoring," Sundevils coach Gerald Pentsil said. "She stepped up and took on a big role for us."
