Las Vegas has climbed ahead of rival Orlando, Fla., as the top domestic travel destination this winter, according to a survey of travel agents.
The American Society of Travel Agents/Fodor's Winter 2001 Hot Spots Survey said Las Vegas captured about 22 percent of the votes of about 400 travel agents surveyed in a quarterly fax and e-mail poll. The survey was conducted in October.
Trailing Las Vegas in the survey were Orlando, Hawaii, New York City, Phoenix, Los Angeles, a tie between Miami and Fort Meyers, Fla., and a tie between New Orleans and San Francisco. Orlando was the top destination last winter and received 20.4 percent of the votes this year.
"Being named top domestic destination bodes extremely well for Las Vegas, particularly during a time when more travelers are choosing to stay closer to home," said Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority President Manny Cortez, in a release issued by the LVCVA. "Las Vegas' reputation as the best place in the world to take a break from reality certainly enhances its appeal right now."
