Cars to be stopped in Boulder City
A DUI checkpoint will be conducted by several law enforcement agencies 7-11 p.m. Friday on U.S. 93 at Veterans Memorial Drive in Boulder City.
Those participating include Boulder City and Henderson Police and the Nevada Highway Patrol. The agencies say their goal is to discourage drinking and driving.
Academy schedules music for Saturday
The Las Vegas Academy orchestra and choir will perform a Christmas concert at 7 tonight at the school auditorium. The event is free to the public.
Tickets will be distributed at the box office at Ninth Street and Clark Avenue starting a half hour before the show. The concert will feature traditional Christmas holiday music performed by the orchestra under the direction of Carol Jackson and the choir under the direction of Holly Steed.
Ethel M holiday program planned
Santa Claus and the Coronado High School Choir will appear 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the eighth annual Ethel M Chocolate's Light the Night Holiday Spectacular.
The two-hour event at the Henderson candy factory at 1 Sunset Way is free and children will be given the opportunity to tell Santa their last-minute holiday wishes while the choir performs seasonal numbers.
CAAR sets new volunteer training
Community Action Against Rape is seeking volunteers for its hotline and speakers bureau. The next voluntary crisis intervention counseling training sessions will be Feb. 4-28.
The 60-hour training class is designed to prepare volunteers to help victims of sexual violence during and after crises. Interviews of applicants will be Jan. 14-25. Those interested in being volunteer assistants can contact CAAR at 385-2153.
EOB project offering more help
The Economic Opportunity Board has doubled its targeted goal of helping families this holiday season.
The agency that assists the poor will be able to help more than 100 families instead of the 50 it had planned to assist with its "Wish Upon A Star - Adopt a Family" Christmas charity. The program received a major financial boost from Pageantry Homes, EOB officials said.
The Salvation Army
is in need of volunteers to work for the Angel Tree program 8 a.m.-3 p.m. today through Friday at Cashman Center. Call Tonica Lucas at 870-4430.
