NEW YORK -- General Electric Corp. revealed it cut 22,000 jobs this year from its work force of 313,000 and said it is prepared for a business climate in 2002 just as weak as this year.
This was the first time GE detailed the extent of its cost-cutting efforts over the past year.
Separately, Motorola Inc. of Chicago said it will cut another 9,400 jobs, including at least 4,000 from its Austin, Texas-based semiconductor business, over the next 12 months as the company continues reducing costs because of weak business conditions.
Counting the 39,000 jobs cut this year, that means Motorola will have cut nearly one-third of its workforce by the end of 2002.
