Comment period is extended
The Bureau of Land Management has extended until Jan. 15 the comment period on the Draft Nevada Test and Training Range Resource Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement.
The plan and statement cover an area of almost 2 million acres and reviews options for wild horses on lands withdrawn for military purposes.
Copies of the plan and statement are available at the BLM Las Vegas Office, and comments should be addressed to Jeff Steinmetz.
The new resource plan will replace one in effect since 1992. A new plan was necessary after Congress passed a 1999 law that withdrew the Nellis Air Force Range from public use for 20 years.
Take a hike or free lecture
Free educational programs, including hikes through the scenic mountains and events in the visitors center, are offered each week in the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.
Reservations are required for all programs. To make reservations or for information call 363-1922. Some upcoming programs:
Intro to Red Rock: The 20-minute introduction programs are offered by Ranger Kathy between 10 a.m. and noon.
Predators and Prey: 20-minute programs ongoing 1-3 p.m. Friday in the Friends Room at the visitors center. Join Janis to learn about predator and prey relationships in the Mojave Desert.
White Rock Spring Loop: A moderate hike with staffer Vera Van Sunday.
Radio station hosts annual event
KXPT 97.1-FM will hold its third annual Toys Around the Clock toy drive at 3 p.m. Thursday and noon Saturday at Palace Station.
The annual event raises cash for Child Haven and provides toys for the Marine Corps' Toys for Tots drive. Call 221-6946.
