Program offers help for partiers
The law firm of Crockett & Myers is sponsoring its fourth annual Home for the Holidays 6 p.m. Friday through noon Jan. 1.
Home for the Holidays provides people who have had too much to drink with a ride home in their own car. The free service is available by calling 456-STOP (7867). Two drivers will be dispatched to pick up the people and drive them home in their own cars. Arrangements can be made in advance.
"We hope that bar owners and their employees will help their patrons drink responsibly. If a customer has had too much to drink this holiday season, we would encourage bartenders to be sure they know how to get a free ride home in their own car," attorney Jim Crockett said.
Tricycle race part of program
An impaired-vision tricycle race and an alcohol consumption demonstration are part of an upcoming event to warn people of the dangers of drinking and driving during the holidays.
The "You Drink and Drive, You Lose" campaign will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the University Medical Center Trauma Center, 800 Rose Drive, to stress responsible alcohol behavior during Christmas and New Year's Eve.
Festivities that are free to the public include a tricycle relay race in which the participants will wear "fatal vision" goggles that simulate various levels of impairment to encourage party-goers to use a designated driver.
Another event is a drinking demonstration between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. to show how alcohol consumption affects different body types during a typical party.
