Letter: Teachers forced to set example
Friday, Dec. 14, 2001 | 3:51 a.m.
I would like to commend Schools Superintendent Carlos Garcia for his initiative to ban smoking at schools because it "just doesn't set a good example for students."
He is on the right track -- and I am awaiting his further initiatives.
I assume that the next step will be to prohibit school employees from drinking or gambling. What kind of example does it set when a student sees a teacher or other school employee exiting a bar or playing blackjack at the neighborhood grocery store?
In light of the recent news that "Kids are getting fatter at alarming rate" (Dec. 12 edition of the Sun), I assume he will institute a rule that no school employee can be overweight, as what kind of example does that set for the students? (Oops, based on the photographs I have seen, that might mean that we need a new superintendent.)
