Columnist Peter Benton: Local golf store offers huge selection of gifts
Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001 | 11:05 a.m.
Peter Benton's golf column appears Wednesday.
I don't know if you fully realize it or not, but there is a little less than two weeks -- 13 days to be precise -- before dear old Santa arrives.
A recent wander through In Celebration of Golf, a unique, two-story, 14,000-square-foot golf emporium located in the Canal Shops at the Venetian hotel-casino, made me realize just how close we are to Christmas.
Having said that, I want to remind area golfers -- both men and women -- that there is a large selection of stocking stuffers and big ticket items still available.
In Celebration of Golf is Roger Maxwell's museum-like combination of 18 themed "celebrations" -- enclosed and elaborately decorated wings with different carpeting, furniture, wall coverings and merchandise -- gifts, art, equipment, apparel and antiques.
It is easy to spend an hour or more just in the downstairs foyer perusing the thousands of distinctive gifts on display in this area.
This column has been in existence now for more than 25 years, during which time I have visited every golf/prop shop in our valley many times over. There isn't a place that can remotely challenge the variety of merchandise and memorabilia available in this store.
One area, "The Art of the Game," features original paintings and sculptures from around the world, as well as fine reproductions, prints, serigraphs, lithographs and posters.
"The Men's and Ladies Professional's Shop" carries the most extensive range of quality name-brand golf clothing imaginable -- honestly, the colors and styles are truly mind-boggling.
In another area, "The Spike Shop," there is an incredible display of men's and women's golf shoes. Incidentally, this is the living room area, complete with supple leather chairs and sofas, a shoe shine service, a variety of golf magazines and books to read, and even a television set tuned to the Golf Channel. Complimentary coffee, tea and other refreshments are also served here.
For that special gift, be it home furnishings, books, art, clubs, clothing, etc., along with the most comprehensive selection of golf-themed decorating items available anywhere, a visit is a must.
To ensure you enjoy your visit, courteous and well-trained "caddies" are on hand to answer questions, help you carry your packages, and even serve you a spot of tea or coffee.
