Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001 | 9:01 a.m.

Bill Young was expected get a huge boost for his campaign to be the next Clark County sheriff this afternoon with one of the most important endorsements of the race.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Protective Association was expected to announce this afternoon that its members voted to back Young.

Young, 45, is a deputy chief for Metro, who has 23 years of experience in the department. Metro Capt. Randy Oaks, Lt. Steve Franks and Detective Gordon Martines also have announced bids for sheriff.

PPA Executive Director Dave Kallas was not available prior to this afternoon's press conference to discuss the endorsement.

However, the PPA has called and interviewed every candidate who has indicated an interest in running for sheriff after Jerry Keller surprisingly announced he would not seek another term as the county's top cop.

In addition to the interviews with candidates, the PPA polled its members and will reveal the results of both this afternoon. Sources tell the Sun Young received the backing of both the PPA's leadership and members.
