Rate-cutting likely to end with quarter-point reduction

Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001 | 9:41 a.m.

WASHINGTON -- The Federal Reserve is close to wrapping up its most aggressive interest rate-cutting exercise since the early 1980s, many economists believe.

They think the Fed will cut rates for an 11th time this year at the close of its meeting today. But many analysts believe the rate cut will be a smaller quarter-point move that will signal that the central bank may be finished with its credit easing campaign.

The decision -- expected to be announced after today's Las Vegas Sun is printed -- will be reported on the Sun's website lasvegassun.com.

"I think this rate cut will be the last one," said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Economy.com.

However, he and other analysts said this expectation could change if President Bush and congressional Republicans are not able to resolve their differences with congressional Democrats and win passage of an economic stimulus package.
