WASHINGTON -- Nestle SA's $11.9 billion buyout of rival pet-food maker Ralston Purina Co. today was approved by U.S. antitrust enforcers on condition Nestle sells two Ralston cat-food brands to Hartz Mountain Corp.
The deal, approved by the Federal Trade Commission, will make Nestle the leader in the $25 billion pet-food industry by expanding its offering of cat and dog food.
Nestle, which makes Friskies cat food and Mighty Dog and Alpo dog food, will acquire Ralston's Purina Cat Chow and Dog Chow.
