Girl Scouts and members of other community organizations helped residents fill 18 construction-size Dumpsters with trash during a cleanup in the city's Windsor Park neighborhood on Saturday.
Altogether, volunteers and residents collected about 13,608 cubic feet of garbage. Packed in cubic-foot boxes stacked on top of each other, the trash would have formed a tower almost 12 times as high as the Stratosphere.
Several wrecked cars were also towed out of the neighborhood.
The city's code enforcement division organized the program to encourage residents to eliminate blight in the area.
"By engaging the neighbors, we hope to reduce the number of code violations and instill a sense of community in the neighborhood," said Dale Stefanisko, the city's code enforcement inspector, who spearheaded the event.
