Letter: Sharing religion is a basic freedom
Monday, Dec. 10, 2001 | 8:53 a.m.
In reference to Joyce Segal's Nov. 28 letter, "Aid workers were fortunate to be set free":
She wrote that the aid workers were irresponsible and arrogant. I disagree. Sharing one's faith is something religious people do, including Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, etc. It's like debating politics for politically active peoples. You'll find liberals, conservatives, moderates, etc. It is stimulating to do.
But what is truly irresponsible and arrogant is a government or ruling party such as the Taliban that is so repressive it does not allow freedom of thought, speech and religion. I also feel that people who share their religious beliefs would do so even if no one came to rescue them from repressive regimes.
