MACAU -- Twenty-one applicants including Las Vegas gambling giant MGM MIRAGE and Nevada casino resort entrepreneurs Sheldon Adelson and Steve Wynn have submitted bids for three casino licenses in Macau as the deadline for submissions ended today, the government announced.
Authorities in this tiny former Portuguese territory at the tip of southern China are abolishing a four-decade old gambling monopoly held by magnate Stanley Ho, whose Macau Tourism and Amusement Co. Ltd. operates 11 casinos.
The winners will be announced next week, officials said.
Macau, located 40 miles west of Hong Kong, is a popular destination for gamblers from Hong Kong, where there are no casinos.
