Officials reject plan for gambling vote

Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001 | 10:08 a.m.

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. -- The Patriot's Point Development Authority unanimously voted Wednesday not to allow a 200-foot casino boat to dock at Charleston Harbor Marina.

The lease would have allowed Golden Isles Cruise Lines of Brunswick, Ga., to operate "casino boats to nowhere" from the Charleston Harbor. These boats would cruise beyond state waters to gamble. However, the authority said a town ordinance prohibits any gambling boats in Mount Pleasant.

Mayor and board member Harry Hallman said the town would enforce the ordinance.

Hallman also said a clause in the lease agreement prohibits casino boats from docking in Mount Pleasant.

Casino boat supporters say there's no difference between casino boats and major cruise ships, which frequently dock in Charleston and often feature gambling.
