Vegas air ambulance operators merging

Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001 | 10:55 a.m.

Mercy Air Inc., one of Las Vegas' two medical helicopter companies, is acquiring its only competitor in the Las Vegas market, Mercy Air's Denver-based parent company announced today.

Mercy Air, which operates two medical helicopters in the Las Vegas Valley, is buying the assets of Metro Aviation, said Mercy Air spokesman Bob Forbuss. Metro Aviation operates the "Flight for Life" emergency helicopter service, with helicopters based at Valley Hospital and far northern Clark County. The acquisition price was not disclosed.

"The consolidation will bring about the higher level of service we all hoped for (in Las Vegas) for many years," Forbuss said. "We will now have one approach, a more logical effort, working toward improved patient care."

Once the acquisition is complete, Mercy Air intends to acquire additional aircraft to beef up service in the valley, Forbuss said, though the scope of that expansion has yet to be determined.
