UNLV’s Frohlich nears scoring mark
Monday, Dec. 3, 2001 | 9:57 a.m.
Linda Frohlich left Oakland on Sunday night with another all-tournament honor, this one from the Oakland Tribune Classic. But the 6-foot-3 senior forward didn't return home to Las Vegas with the UNLV career scoring record.
That will have to wait another week.
After scoring a game-high 20 points and grabbing eight rebounds in 27 minutes of action in the Lady Rebels' 83-28 consolation game victory over Central Connecticut State, Frohlich finds herself with 1,890 career points, two shy of the mark set by former All-American Misty Thomas (1982-86). Frohlich will likely break that mark in Sunday afternoon's game at Nevada-Reno.
"I really didn't know how close I was (to breaking it)," Frohlich said. "I guess it's going (to happen) in Reno. My thoughts have always been that it was going to happen sooner or later. If not today, then the next day. Or the next day."
Frohlich said she doesn't think there will be any problem in having to wait another week to eclipse the record.
"I have a 20-page marketing paper due on Friday," she said. "That's going to be my focus this week."
The Lady Rebels (5-1) lost to 13th-ranked Georgia, 77-62, in Saturday's opener despite 27 points from Frohlich. UNLV held a 47-38 lead with 13:11 to go in that one before the perennial SEC powerhouse went on a 15-4 spurt and won going away. Georgia (5-0) won the championship over host Cal (4-1), 54-48, on Sunday.
UNLV bounced back Sunday against a Central Connecticut State (0-5) squad that was clearly outclassed. The Lady Rebels led 38-10 at halftime and forced the Blue Devils into 34 turnovers.
Frohlich's 20 points led the way and sophomore center Petra Glaser (12 points), senior guard Kinesha Davis (9 points, 4 steals), junior Talisha Mitchell (10 points) and senior Courtney Swanson (10 points) also contributed. Eleven Lady Rebel players scored as head coach Regina Miller emptied her bench early.
