SUN CAPITAL BUREAU
CARSON CITY -- The state is holding an auction Saturday in Las Vegas on unclaimed property that includes coins, gaming tokens, silver ingots and gold and silver jewelry.
Property left in bank accounts, safe deposit boxes and at financial institutions after residents die goes to the state to hold so that survivors can claim it.
State Treasurer Brian Krolicki says items must be claimed within a year after they are turned over to the Unclaimed Property Division.
The auction does not end the owner's claim, however. The state will hold the money for another year. If the owner does not turn up by then, it will go to the state treasury.
More than 400 people participated in last year's auction. Those who want to bid must register with the auctioneer between 8 and 11 a.m. The auction begins 11 a.m. and will continue until all items are sold.
Since 1979 more than $100 million in unclaimed assets have been acquired by the state.
The auction will be held at Robert Diero and Associates, 4050 W. Harmon Ave., Suite 1. For more information call (702) 792-4050.
