Fugitive sought in kidnapping jailed

Monday, Dec. 3, 2001 | 10:47 a.m.

A 20-year-old woman accused of beating her mother on Thanksgiving Day and kidnapping her daughter in California was captured in Las Vegas while talking on a pay phone.

Shaylene Inman was held this morning in the Clark County jail after her arrest Friday by Metro Police's fugitive unit. She was held pending extradition to San Bernardino, Calif., where she faces burglary and kidnapping charges.

Fugitive unit detectives were told of Inman's possible presence at a fast food restaurant at Rainbow Boulevard and Spring Mountain Road Friday about 10:30 a.m. The detectives spotted Inman on the phone. She was arrested without incident and her 4-year-old daughter was sitting in a nearby car, Sgt. Dan Flaherty of the fugitive unit said.

The girl "was crying and confused about what was going on, but she was fine," Flaherty said.

The girl was taken to Child Haven as her grandmother and two California detectives drove to Las Vegas Friday.

Inman is accused of forcing her way into the home of her mother on Thanksgiving, beating her mother and taking the girl.

Inman's mother has had custody of the girl since she was born, while Inman was in custody in a juvenile jail.

detectives spotted Inman in a stolen car in an apartment complex Thursday, but didn't stop her because the girl was not with her.

"The objective was to recover the child," Flaherty said

Inman had apparently been in Las Vegas for several months. She was arrested in October on a possession of a stolen vehicle charge.
