Agassi to visit charter school during Thursday open house
Monday, Dec. 3, 2001 | 8:37 a.m.
Tennis star and philanthropist Andre Agassi will join students in grades 3 through 5 of his charter school during an open house celebration Thursday at 4:15 p.m.
The open house is being held in honor of student achievements made since the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy opened Aug. 30. Plans call for the school to continue to expand, with a grade level being added each year.
The Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation provided the core funding for the academy, which is designed to give disadvantaged youths the opportunity to increase their education opportunities, attend college and participate in community and cultural activities.
During the open house, Wayne Tanaka, principal for Agassi Prep, will talk about the school's vision and its programs, and the Agassi Prep choir will perform.
Additionally, Agassi Prep was honored Friday with a $7,500 grant from the Nevada Public Education Foundation. The school plans to use the money for a media presentation lab so that students can get hands-on media and broadcast experience.
The lab will include two digital video camcorders, an online editing system, video monitor, microphones and a projector. The equipment will allow students to learn various aspects of television journalism.
